Flynn Broady Jr for Cobb County District Attorney

As the Democratic candidate for Cobb County District Attorney, I promise to do everything in my power to reform our criminal justice system. I will break the patterns of inequities and inequalities among us while holding strong to our shared values.

I will move Cobb County forward with my fellow Democrats focusing on a balanced judicial system, women’s rights, restorative justice, and connecting law enforcement to the community to help thwart the school to prison pipeline and improve relationships.

I served our nation for 26 years in the United States Army. During this time, I served many roles: a recruiter, a ROTC instructor and as a Combat Infantryman. I served three overseas tours, including combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom. While serving in OIF as an Infantry First Sergeant, I led 157 men and women in daily combat, in Iraq’s Anbar Province, considered the most dangerous province in all of Iraq. I mention all this experience to illustrate my leadership, my ability to work with and mold a team and most importantly, the ability to make the tough decision.

After receiving degrees while in the military, I served as Cobb County Assistant Solicitor, handling all types of misdemeanor cases, serving as the DUI Accountability Court Prosecutor, I also accepted the role of Coordinator for the Cobb Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court. In that role, I helped Cobb veterans that came before our criminal justice system. The Veterans Court served as an alternative to incarceration, providing treatment to our veterans for mental health and substance abuse issues brought on as a result of military service.

My work in both accountability courts further demonstrated the importance of the effect courts can have on the entire life of offenders and ways in which we can lift our whole community. A non-violent arrest should not be a life and definitely not a death sentence.

I firmly believe that when we uncover the root causes of criminal behavior, by means of treatment and accountability, we can return offenders back to the community as productive citizens.

Furthermore, I will not prosecute anyone under Kemp’s unconstitutional abortion ban law. This includes healthcare providers. The U.S. Supreme Court has set a precedent that I will not break.

For our non-violent offenders, I want to move them to a diversion program or an accountability court.  Both programs will be pre-adjudication to allow for non-violent offenders to be restored back to our community as productive citizens and without a criminal history that becomes a scarlet letter for that offender, denying future employment and/or housing opportunities.

By initiating bond reform, we can eliminate collateral economic consequences that arise when someone is placed in jail. For our non-violent offenders, I would move them to a diversion program or an accountability court.

I will always place ethics and evidence over influence. I will seek justice for our community to make it a safer place. I will not let the fabric of our democracy be frayed. In fact, I will further weave us together with a fair and balanced court system.
