Missing in Inaction: Another Republican Candidate Ghosts Forum

JP Popham | Published on 2/1/2025

Do Cobb Republicans fear public accountability? For the second time in the past 12-months, a GOP candidate has ghosted a public forum and denied voters a chance to hear their platform.

Democratic candidates for the Cobb County Board of Commissioners- Erick Allen, Jaha Howard, and Tracy Stevenson- all appeared on stage for the non-partisan District 2 Candidate Forum hosted by the Cobb County Democracy Center and other community organizations.

However republican Alicia Adams didn’t bother showing. Cobb County residents might remember during fall of 2024 when the GOP school board candidates also flaked on their candidate forum.

Since winning their seats, school board republicans have continued to close themselves off from their constituents and ignore the public. It seems Ms. Adams is hoping to follow in their footsteps.

At least the republican candidates from District 4 made an appearance at their forum, even if their answers to the questions left a lot to be desired.

The bar for GOP competence is on the floor friends.

We know Adams will appear at speaking engagements, but only if they are scripted speeches at GOP events. While the democrats at both forums layed out their community experiences and plans for the county, the answers from republicans have left a lot to be desired.

Alicia Adams' claim to community involvement is riding a bus, while her counterparts in District 4 are simply hoping enough of their friends will show up to get them elected.

They only have “concepts of a plan,” and we see how well that strategy is playing out.

Early voting begins on Saturday for the Special Election Primaries for Districts 2 and 4. If you haven’t already made a plan to vote, please do so as soon as possible.

Republicans drastically redrew the maps for the Cobb County Board of Commissioners and it is likely you have been redistricted.

We have seen the blame for this redistricting placed on Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid, current Commissioners Jerica Richardson (D2) and Monique Sheffield (D4), but we would like to remind the public that it was only Democrat districts that required special elections due to the redistricting, the republicans in Districts 1 and 3 were unaffected.

Remember that the next time Keli Gambril (D1) looks down her nose at the black women who share the dais with her or when JoAnn Birrell (D3) clutches her pearls at the crisis her own party created.

Important Election Update: Taniesha Whorton Has Withdrawn

Please note that Tanisha Whorton has withdrawn her candidacy. However, her name will still appear on the ballot. A vote for her will not count, so please be mindful when casting your vote.

Make sure your voice is heard by supporting candidates who are actively running. Every vote matters—especially in local elections!

Call to Action: Need Poll Workers and Watchers for the February 11th Election

Fair elections require all of us to take an active role in the process. In Cobb County, we need both poll workers and poll watchers to ensure transparency and integrity at the ballot box. Every election matters—especially local ones that directly impact our communities.

Applications are still open for those interested in serving as poll workers or watchers. If you're ready to make a difference, please contact Erika Bailey at erika@cobbdemocrats.org.
